National Board for Professional Teaching Standards Certification Brunswick County has a large number of NBPTS certified teachers. Teachers who are working toward this certification have a support system of NBPTS colleagues to assist them in the process. The state salary schedule for NBPTS certified teachers is 12% higher than the normal salary schedule. In addition, BCS teachers that successfully complete the National Board certification process receive a one-time bonus of $1000; however, no payment is to be made to employees transferring to BCS and already holding the certification. Teachers can receive $250 per semester for each first- or second-year ILT (Initially-Licensed Teacher) they mentor, up to a maximum of $500 ($1000 per year).
Brunswick County Schools employees receive an annual supplement, provided by the local school board. BCS first year teachers have the option of receiving their local supplement at the beginning of the school year. If you are a first year teacher and would prefer your supplement at the beginning of the school year, please submit this form to the Human Resource Division. Al new full-time employees have thirty days after their date of hire to sign up for a term life insurance policy. This is a state sponsored plan available through payroll deduction and is administered by Prudential Retirement. NC STATE HEALTH PLAN: The State Health Plan offers two insurance plans, the Basic 70/30 Plan and the Standard 80/20 Plan. PRESCRIPTION DRUG PLAN: Prescription drugs are not subject to deductible and coinsurance. Co-payment for each 30 day supply is currently: $12 Generic - $40 Preferred Brand (where generic is not available) - $64 Non-Preferred Brand where generic is not available. RETIREMENT: Mandatory 6% is withheld from all full-time employees' payroll checks for the North Carolina State Retirement System. Refund of contributions or a direct rollover to an IRA is available upon resignation from the school system. Note: Employees become vested after five (5) years of contributory service. DISABILITY INCOME PLAN: A comprehensive short-term and long-term plan is provided at the employer's expense for employees who meet appropriate state service requirements. UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE: Public school employees are entitled to unemployment insurance. Benefit amounts are based on a percentage of a person's earnings, up to the allowable maximum. WORKERS' COMPENSATION: All public school employees are entitled to receive Workers Compensation under the North Carolina Workers Compensation Act. Employees must have suffered an accidental injury or contracted an occupation disease in the course of employment to be eligible for medical payments, compensation for lost salary, or death benefits under this program. DEATH BENEFIT: After one year of service under the NC State Retirement System, death benefit is paid to beneficiary equaling employee's annual salary minimum of $25,000 and maximum of $50,00). Employee must have been paid salary with the last 180 days. ANNUAL LEAVE: Employees earn annual leave/vacation leave on a scale based on total years of state service. Annual leave includes both scheduled and unscheduled leave days. All unscheduled annual leave must be approved by the immediate supervisor. Employees can accumulate up to thirty (30) days with excess converting to sick leave on June 30. Note: Prior approval is required. Years of State Service Days Earned Per Month Less than 5 years 1.1666 5 but less than 10 years 1.4166 10 but less than 15 years 1.6666 15 but less than 20 years 1.9166 20 years or more 2.1666 Once your Annual Leave balance accrues more than 30 days, anything over 30 days becomes a sick leave day. SICK LEAVE: Employees earn one day per month. Sick leave can be used towards creditable service time after an employee has become vested. (5 years of contributing service) 20 sick leave days = 1 month of service, 21 sick leave days = 2 months of service. Sick leave accumulates indefinitely. LEAVE OF ABSENCE WITH PAY: Jury duty, certain court attendance, and up to fifteen (15) days of military leave per year. LEAVE OF ABSENCE WITHOUT PAY: Parental leave (for birth or adoption of child), education leave, or any other reasons approved by Board of Education. LONGEVITY PAY: Available to teachers and classified employees with at least ten (10) years of state service, paid annually the month following "anniversary" month. HOLIDAYS: 10 or 11 scheduled each year for full-time and part-time employees. DIRECT DEPOSIT: All employees are eligible for direct deposit to the bank of their choice. TERM LIFE INSURANCE: A $5,000.00 term life insurance policy is provided at no cost to the employee. (Additional coverage can be deducted from employee's paycheck for employee, spouse, children and/or family).
Available to teachers ONLY (Partial Pay Benefits) - EXTENDED SICK LEAVE: Up to twenty (20) days per year for personal illness after accumulated sick leave is exhausted with appropriate medical documentation. A $50.00 per day deduction applies. - PERSONAL LEAVE: Two days earned per year, with up to five (5) days accumulating. A $50.00 per day deduction applies.
