TECHNOLOGY ACCEPTABLE USE POLICY
The Brunswick County Schools' countywide area computer network was designed for the support and delivery of the Brunswick County Schools' instructional program. Users of the system will report any misuse of the network to the system administrator. Misuse of electronic information resources can be a violation of local, state and federal laws. All the rules of conduct described in the Board Policies of the Brunswick County School System will apply while using the network. Users of the Brunswick County Schools' network can be prosecuted for violating those laws.
Misuse can come in many forms, but it is commonly viewed as any message(s) sent or received that indicates or suggests pornography, unethical or illegal solicitation, racism, sexism, or inappropriate language.
The use of the Brunswick County Schools' network is a privilege and misuse of the network may result in a cancellation of those privileges. The network system administrator (operating under the aegis of the school board and the district office) will decide what is appropriate use. The system administrator(s) may close an account at any time when deemed necessary. The administration, staff, or faculty of the Brunswick County School System may request that the system administrator deny, revoke, or suspend specific user accounts.
All student users, who access the internet from any school system terminal, must have a signed STUDENT SIGNATURE AND PARENTAL RELEASE form on file at the beginning of school in which they are enrolled. Students, parents and teachers must renew this form annually at the beginning of each school year. Schools may supplement any provisions of the Brunswick County Schools Technology Acceptable Use Policy, and may require additional parent releases and approvals, but in no case will such documents replace the SCHOOL SYSTEM STUDENT SIGNATURE AND PARENTAL CONSENT form (attached).
Network Etiquette and Privacy:
Users should give consideration to network etiquette and privacy by:
Refraining from the use of inappropriate or obscene language on the network or the transmission of abusive or threatening messages.
Refraining from posting home addresses or personal phone numbers on the network.
Refraining from using the Brunswick County Schools' wide area network in any way that would disrupt use of the network by others.
Being aware that electronic mail (e-mail) is not guaranteed to be private.
Reporting misuse of the network to the building administrator, teacher or the wide area network administrator.
Using brevity as much as possible.
Minimizing spelling errors and proofreading email messages.
Using accurate and descriptive titles for your email messages.
Remembering that humor and satire can often be misinterpreted.
Reducing the number of email messages by using the same message for multiple addresses if that is appropriate.
Refraining from using the email system as a forum to broadcast political or religious opinions, lobby for support or advertise services or products not approved by the administration.
Refraining from typing messages in all upper case because readers may interpret it as shouting.
The Brunswick County School System makes no warranties of any kind, whether expressed or implied, for the service it is providing. Brunswick County Schools will not be responsible for any damages due to lost data as a result of delays, non-deliveries, missed-deliveries, or service interruptions caused by the system or user errors or omissions. Use of any information obtained via the information system is at the risk of the user. Brunswick County Schools specifically disclaims any responsibility for the accuracy of information obtained through its services.
Security on any computer system is a high priority because there are so many users. When breeches of security are noticed, the system administrator should be notified at once. Never demonstrate the problem to other users. Never use another individual's account without written permission from that person. Only the person to which that account is assigned should use that account. Users should change passwords frequently. Any user identified as a security risk will be denied access to the Brunswick County School network.
Vandalism is defined as any malicious attempt to harm or destroy technology hardware, software, or data of another user or any other agencies or networks connected to the system. This includes, but is not limited to, the uploading or creation of computer viruses. Any vandalism may result in the loss of computer services, disciplinary action, and legal action.
The Brunswick County School System requires all users to renew their accounts for service at the start of each school year or when user information changes. Whenever possible all students must sign the consent form. If they are unable to sign their name a parent/guardian must sign for them. The Brunswick County Schools' Technology Department must be notified of any changes in account information.
